Gonz Insulation – What is Spray Foam Insulation?

Spread the love

spray foam insulation is a plastic material that creates an air seal when it’s sprayed on walls, attics, crawl spaces and rim joist in existing homes. It can also be used to insulate new construction and pole barns. This insulation is a green building product because it improves energy efficiency by sealing the home and reducing drafts, heat loss and moisture. This can lead to major savings on energy bills.

Comparing Spray Foam Insulation to Traditional Insulation Methods

This type of insulation is made from polyurethane, a composite material created when 2 liquid chemical components undergo a chemical reaction to expand and harden into a thick plastic foam. These chemicals are called the A-side and the B-side. The A-side is a liquid isocyanate and the B-side is a polyol resin. These are stored in separate hoppers or tanks and then sprayed from the tip of a spray gun where they meet to form the foam.

The spray is applied to the wall, attic or other area and the chemicals react on contact. They expand and harden quickly, creating an effective air and vapor barrier. This spraying process is a messy one, and homeowners are advised to vacate the house during this time. The isocyanates can cause irritation to the eyes, lungs and gastrointestinal tract and can be absorbed through the skin. Overexposure can even result in chemical bronchitis.

Homeowners can purchase DIY spray foam insulation kits and do the work themselves, but professional installation is recommended. This is due to the difficulty of achieving consistent coverage and proper expansion without prior experience. Closed cell spray foam is a better choice than open cell as it’s more rigid and does a better job of insulating a space. It’s also more expensive, but can save money on energy bills.
